Food From The Crypt- Oatmeal Swirlers

GeekBlips: vote it up!

The more things I think of that I used to eat when I was little, the more I realize that not many people remember the same items. Take for instance Oatmeal Swirlers.
I feel like I am the only person that ate this stuff. It was made by General Mills and was available from the mid to late 80's in the cereal aisle. Every package of oatmeal came with a flavored jelly packet, and aside from flavoring the oatmeal, you were supposed to be able to make cool designs drawing with the packet, using the oatmeal as a canvas. Of course the jelly never spread like in the commercials so I just mixed it all in and ate away. I remember the flavors being strawberry, maple, chocolate, and apple cinnamon. Strawberry was always my favorite, to me the other flavors tasted funky. I have included some pictures and the commercial below, maybe it will help jog some memories. Who knows, I might not have been the only one that liked Oatmeal Swirlers.

  1. Rick,

You are not alone... I remember having Oatmeal Swirlers back when I was in middle school and/or high school (I preferred the fruit variety pack--strawberry, cherry and apple cinnamon--and I wish they would have made blueberry and raspberry flavors as well).

    2. So the other night I made a raspberry sauce for ice cream, and today I made oatmeal and put some of it in and it tasted just like the raspberry swirlers. The raspberry sauce recipe I used is https://www.tastesoflizzyt.com/easy-raspberry-sauce-recipe/

    3. I have been trying to remember what exactly this was called for the better part of my adult life; for some reason I never thought to Google it 🙄... this was AMAZING stuff! Not sure why I remembered it being cream of wheat or the like, but either way I sure miss it! Strawberry was also my favorite!

  16. I ate Oatmeal Swirlers for years as a kid and was very sad when they were discontinued. My other favorite breakfast food was the cereal Scoops that was either chocolate or vanilla puffs for the ice cream scoops and I think chocolate flavored cones. I even sent off to the watch, which I wore for years. Oh how I miss the 80s!!!

  23. Yaaaas. I was wondering if this stuff still existed! The strawberry type in particular, so I'm glad you called that out. Been craving it recently for some reason. But alas, it appears not. At least I'm not crazy and it was a real thing in the past (and one that lots of kids liked, too!)

  28. Wow! I couldn't remember what it was called! Thank you! Lol I have looked on occassion myself. Every once in awhile I have seen them bring back items....was hoping this would be one as well. I wonder what could be the closest to making it home made. I always had the strawberry swirlers and I have tried buying different strawberry products and I havent came close yet. Thanks for bringing back some good memories ❤

  30. Best hot cereal of the 80’s and 90’s. I use to love this cereal growing up. Strawberry was my favorite as well. I wish they never discontinued it. Thanks for the great flashback.

  31. I thought I was alone on this. No one remembers these and especially not my mom or siblings. My mom use to buy them all the time for us. Tell me how a four year old could remember these along with a bunch of other foods that no one else remembers. I always go on a hunt looking for them on the net, and than I'll show everyone so they can stop thinking I'm crazy, and stop thinking I just imagined these foods lol. Best part is when people tell me I was too young to remember, and bam I hit them with that proof😂
